Thorn
Go for a half day, not a night: the white-walled old town is 400 m across and done in 2–3 hours; sleep in Roermond or Weert unless you want the riverside quiet.
Thorn is a former microstate in Dutch Limburg: a walled nunnery town of about 1,000 people whose centre is a protected monument, painted white after a French window tax. The old town is small and flat, the Meuse floodplain around it is cycling country, and buses run hourly from Roermond and Weert. Most travellers see it in an afternoon; an overnight buys you an empty town at dusk and a winery or brewery stop.

Get around
The old town is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, but streets are cobbled and rough underfoot. Buses (line 73) stop at Thorn, Centrum and run hourly to Roermond and Weert. For the Meuse nature reserves and the Belgian border villages, rent a bike in Thorn or drive.
