Thohoyandou
Half a day to a full day: the Phiphidi Waterfall, a market visit and a short hike in the Soutpansberg range. Not a base — use Polokwane or Hoedspruit for longer stays.
Thohoyandou is the cultural and administrative heart of the Vhembe District, home to the University of Venda and a gateway to the Soutpansberg mountains. Most travellers stop for a morning or afternoon on the way between Kruger and Polokwane, drawn by the Phiphidi Waterfall and local craft markets. The town itself is compact; the real draw is the surrounding landscape and traditional villages.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Phiphidi Waterfall access may require a small fee paid to a local guide or community trust — carry cash.
- Soutpansberg hiking trails are not always marked; hire a local guide or use a GPS app.
- Minibus taxis stop anywhere; driving is safer and more flexible.
- Cell reception is patchy in the mountains; download offline maps.
Thohoyandou is generally safe during the day, but avoid walking alone after dark. Petty crime like bag snatching can occur at markets. The main risks are road conditions and heat in summer.
