Thanjavur was the Chola capital and its Brihadisvara Temple, finished in 1011 CE, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the reason most travellers come. The city is compact, cheap and 342 km from Chennai, with Tiruchirappalli airport 57 km away. It works as a one-night stop on a Tamil Nadu loop, or a two-night base for Kumbakonam, Thiruvayaru and Thirukkarugavur.
