Thalassery is a small Malabar coast town in Kannur District, about 22 km south of Kannur, known for its fort, its pier and Thalassery biryani. Sights sit within 4 km of the centre and a car or auto covers them in a day. Most travellers pass through on the Konkan Railway or use it as a quieter base for Kannur and the beaches.

Get around
Local buses run every few minutes and autos are everywhere; agree the fare before you get in. Walking is limited: pavements are patchy and traffic is heavy. For the fort, pier, Dharmadam and Muzhappilangad in one day, hire an auto or car by the hour.
