Thaba-Tseka

Skip unless you need a stopover on the A1 between Maseru and the eastern mountains: a half-hour walk, a meal and a bed, not a destination.

Thaba-Tseka is a small administrative town on the A1, about 140 km from Maseru. It has a bank, a post office, a hospital and a few shops — nothing that justifies a dedicated trip. Use it as a lunch-and-fuel break or an overnight stop if you are driving to Katse Dam or the eastern highlands and do not want to push the full gravel section in the dark.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Lumela ntate / mme', then wait for 'Khotso'; avoid: Asking directions without a greeting
  • Handshake: Soft, sometimes with a three-part grip; avoid: Crushing grips

Scams and watch-outs

  • No petrol stations on the 20 km gravel stretch east of town; fill up in Thaba-Tseka.
  • The A1 is mostly tarred but the final 20 km to Katse Dam is gravel — allow 1 h for that section.
  • Last shops close by 17:00; plan meals and supplies accordingly.
  • Check road conditions with your lodge or the Lesotho Roads Authority before driving in wet weather.

Thaba-Tseka is safe by day; avoid walking alone after dark. The main risk is road safety on the gravel section east of town — drive slowly, watch for livestock and potholes.
