Texas, Queensland
Give Texas one night, not a day: a 90-minute stop covers the railway and tobacco museums, then push on to Stanthorpe or Goondiwindi.
Texas is a small border-country village of about 840 people on the Dumaresq River, on the Queensland–New South Wales line between Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi. It has two small museums, a pub and a motel, and it works as a quiet overnight break on a Darling Downs drive rather than a destination in itself. Two hours on foot covers the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and food options are limited; fill up in Stanthorpe, Inglewood or Goondiwindi before you arrive.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside the village; download offline maps.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water if you walk anywhere after 10:00.
- The road in from Stanthorpe has no shoulder in places; watch for trucks and wildlife at dusk.
Very low crime risk in a village this size. The real hazards are the drive in, summer heat and wildlife on the road at dusk.
