Texas City
Half a day for the Dike and a meal; not a base. Use it as a stop between Houston and Galveston, or skip it entirely.
Texas City is a working port town on the Texas mainland coast, 20 minutes north of Galveston. Its main draw is the Texas City Dike, a 5-mile (8 km) jetty popular for windsurfing, kitesurfing and fishing. There is no historic district or beach resort. Most travellers pass through on I-45 between Houston and Galveston. A short stop works if you want to see the Dike or need a budget hotel near the coast.
