Tetovo sits in the Polog valley under the Šar Mountains, about 45–60 minutes by bus from Skopje. Get around
The centre is walkable: Šarena Džamija, Čifte Hamam and the Pena river bridges are within 10 minutes of each other. The Arabati Baba Tekje is a 15–20 min walk west. The fortress sits on the hill above town; the walk up from the centre takes 30–45 min and is uphill most of the way. Taxis wait on Ilindenska and Maršal Tito; agree the fare or check the meter before you set off.

Tetovo is calm for visitors and the centre is fine on foot by day. The real risks are the steep, unrailed fortress ruins, narrow mountain roads and identity politics — keep opinions to yourself and carry cash.
