Tetela de Ocampo
Go for one night, two at most: a Pueblo Mágico of about 5,600 people where the sights take half a day and the caves and waterfalls take the rest.
Tetela de Ocampo is a small colonial mining town in the Puebla highlands, roughly 3–4 hours by bus from Mexico City or Puebla. It is a Pueblo Mágico with a Gothic parish church, a mural-filled city hall and a museum about the 1862 fight against the French army. The real draw is outdoors: an undeveloped cave system with an underground river, a 75 m waterfall used for rappelling, and hiking or mountain biking on the surrounding ridges. One night covers the town; add a second for the caves or the falls.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Cave tours at Carreragco involve water and scrambling: bring a change of clothes, a towel and a dry bag for your phone. Not suitable for small children, elderly visitors or anyone with mobility limits.
- Trails and cave access can close after heavy rain; ask locally before setting out in the wet season.
- The ATAH bus terminal sells tickets in cash only; carry pesos.
- Highland nights are cold year-round — bring a jacket even in summer.
- Some small museums keep irregular hours; confirm before you walk out.
Tetela is a small, calm highland town and the usual risks are practical: cold nights, wet cave floors, unlit trails after dark and mountain roads in rain. Keep to the centre at night, agree taxi fares first, and use a local guide for caves.
