Tenosique de Pino Suárez
Go for one night in Carnival season or as a Tren Maya stop for the Pomona and San Claudio ruins; skip the town itself otherwise.
Tenosique is a river town of about 35,000 on the Usumacinta, in eastern Tabasco. It is not a sightseeing town: the draw is the pre-Hispanic Carnival and el Pocho dance, plus two INAH-run Maya sites in the municipality. Most travellers pass through on the Tren Maya or break the Villahermosa–Palenque road here for one night.

Get around
The centre is compact and flat: walk it. Moto-taxis are the cheap local way to cover longer hops and can be flagged on the street or found near the malecón and the Tren Maya station. Taxis are the practical option for the ruins, which sit outside town.

- The ruins have no shops nearby: carry water, a hat and mosquito repellent.
Tenosique is a working river town, not a resort: violent crime is a real concern in parts of Tabasco, so keep to the centre after dark, use taxis or moto-taxis at night and carry only what you need.
