Telluride sits at 2,438 m in a box canyon in southwestern Colorado, about 160 km from Four Corners. It was a gold and silver boomtown incorporated in 1878 and is now a ski resort town with a free gondola linking it to Mountain Village. Do not plan to drive around town: there is free bus service in Telluride and Mountain Village and a free gondola between the two. Rental cars (Hertz, Alamo/National) are available in Mountain Village. A car helps for day trips and for the Montrose airport run.
