Tehuacán
Go for 1–2 nights if you want the archaeology and the cactus valley; skip it if you are only collecting colonial architecture.
Tehuacán is Puebla state's second city, about 2 h from Puebla and 4 h from Mexico City by bus. It matters for two things: the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, a UNESCO-listed arid zone with 10,000-year-old cave art and the earliest known maize domestication, and a compact, walkable centre with a topiary-filled plaza and a cave-based cathedral. One full day covers the centre; two days adds the archaeological zone and the valley.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable: plaza, cathedral, market and Parque Ecológico are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For the Museo de la Evolución, Tehuacán Viejo or the valley, use taxis, Uber or the local buses and combis; agree the fare or check the app before you get in.

Scams and watch-outs
- The archaeological zone at Tehuacán Viejo is closed on Mondays and its site museum has been shut; check before you go.
- Coxcatlán Cave is far south of the city and reached by rough road: arrange transport and a guide in advance, do not turn up.
- Some small restaurants are cash only; carry pesos.
- Afternoon heat in spring is strong; carry water and start sights early.
Tehuacán is generally calm and the centre is fine on foot in daylight and early evening. Use taxis or Uber after dark, keep to lit streets, and treat the remote valley roads as a guided trip rather than a solo drive.
