Tegernsee is a lake town 1 h from Munich by train, ringed by the Wallberg and other foothills. The town itself is small: a former Benedictine monastery, a castle, a brewery and a lakeside promenade. Most travellers come for a day on the water or as a base for easy Alpine walks, and the valley fills with Munich day-trippers on sunny weekends.

Get around
The Bayerische Oberlandbahn runs hourly from Munich to Tegernsee station, in the town centre. Buses (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern) link the villages around the lake; the boat fleet calls at piers from Gmund to St. Quirin. The town is walkable; a car helps for the side valleys but parking near the lake fills early on weekends.
