Tecate
Go for one night if you want the easiest US–Mexico border crossing in California, a brewery tour and a quiet plaza; skip it as a base for Baja sightseeing.
Tecate is a small border city of about 73,000 people in a valley east of Tijuana, with no matching town on the US side. Its draw is the crossing itself, the namesake brewery, a walkable centre and access to Highway 3 toward Valle de Guadalupe and Ensenada. Most travellers use it for a single night or a half-day, not a multi-day stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Border wait times swing by hour: check the CBP wait-time page before you commit to a crossing.
- Summer is hot and dry; carry water on any hike toward Kuuchamaa.
- The Rumorosa grade on Highway 2 east of Tecate is a steep mountain road: drive it in daylight, not at night.
- Some Highway 3 and out-of-centre venues are cash-first: ask before you order or book.
Tecate is calmer than Tijuana or Mexicali, and the crossing is the least crowded in California. The real risks are the summer heat, the Rumorosa grade at night and unposted prices in bars: ask the total before you sit.
