Te Puke
Stop only if you want an orchard tour or the honey centre: half a day on the Tauranga–Rotorua drive, then sleep in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or Rotorua.
Te Puke is a working horticultural town of about 8,000 people on State Highway 2 between Tauranga and Rotorua, and it calls itself the kiwifruit capital of the world. There is no town-centre sight to see. The reason to stop is the orchards and packhouses around it, plus the beaches at Maketu and Papamoa a short drive east. Most travellers use it as a two-to-three-hour break in a driving day, or as a cheaper bed than Tauranga or Mount Maunganui.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- State Highway 2 runs straight through town: watch for trucks when crossing and turning right.
- Orchard and packhouse visits are working sites: closed shoes, no picking, and some require booking ahead.
- Kiwifruit vines are sprayed and orchards are private property: do not walk in uninvited.
- Beaches at Maketu and Papamoa are not always patrolled: check the day's conditions and patrol flags before swimming.
- Small-town kitchens close early: many Jellicoe Street places stop serving by 20:00–21:00.
Te Puke is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are practical: SH2 traffic, unpatrolled surf at Maketu and Papamoa, and private orchard land. Standard New Zealand precautions apply.
