Te Kuiti
Stop for 2–3 hours on the drive between Hamilton and New Plymouth, or sleep one night if you want Waitomo caves at opening time.
Te Kuiti is a small King Country town on State Highway 3 with a working main street, a wooden railway station and a sheep-shearing identity. It is not a destination in itself: the reason to stop is that Waitomo's glowworm caves are 18 km away and Te Kuiti is the cheaper, quieter bed. Two hours covers the town on foot; one night covers the caves.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- SH3 through town carries logging and stock trucks: cross at marked points.
- Fuel up here if you are heading to the coast or the Waitomo back roads; the next services can be far apart.
- Small-town kitchens close early: last orders are often before 20:00.
- The Northern Explorer only stops for booked groups of 10 or more: do not plan a rail arrival.
A quiet town with no notable crime problem for visitors. The real risks are SH3 traffic, winter ice on the Mount Messenger road and long gaps between fuel stops.
