Tbilisi in December: what to expect

Tbilisi sits in a valley in eastern Georgia, and December is its first proper winter month. Days are cool and often overcast, with highs around 8 °C and nights close to freezing; cold snaps can push the city below 0 °C. Rain falls on roughly a third of the month, and when it turns to snow it usually melts within a day in the centre.

The practical effect is short days and a low sun. Plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day and keep an indoor option for each afternoon. Wind is rarely strong, but damp cold in the old town feels colder than the number suggests, so a warm coat matters more than an umbrella.

December splits into two halves. The first three weeks are among the quietest of the year in Tbilisi: hotel rates drop, restaurants take walk-ins and the sulphur bath houses have space. From about 20 December the city fills for the New Year holidays, and prices climb with it.

New Year itself is the expensive, busy window. Georgians celebrate at home on 31 December and 1 January, so many shops and restaurants close for those two days while family feasts happen behind closed doors. Book accommodation and any long-distance transport before mid-December if you are travelling over the holiday.

December is mostly a build-up month rather than a festival month in Tbilisi. The New Year period brings decorated streets, markets and evening lights along Rustaveli Avenue and in the old town, and the season runs into Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, which is a separate celebration with its own processions.

Ski season at Gudauri, about two hours north of the city, opens in December and pulls weekend traffic out of Tbilisi. Confirm dates and snow conditions before you commit, since early-season cover varies.

Keep December days in the city. The old town, the sulphur baths in Abanotubani and the museums along Rustaveli work in any weather, and a long lunch with Georgian wine is a reasonable plan for a wet afternoon. Mtskheta, 30 minutes away, is a short half-day trip when the sky clears.

For snow, Gudauri is the reliable December option. Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Road are the riskier bet: the road can close after heavy snow, so check conditions the morning you plan to leave and keep a city plan as backup. Kakheti wine country is quiet and cold but open, and the cellars are indoors.

Pack for damp cold, not deep snow. A warm insulated coat, a hat, gloves and a scarf cover most December days in Tbilisi, and waterproof shoes are more useful than heavy boots unless you are heading to Gudauri. Layers work better than one thick jumper because interiors are well heated.

Add a small umbrella or a hood, a power adapter for Georgian sockets, and cash in lari for small cafés and taxis. If you plan to ski, rent gear at the resort rather than carrying it from home.

November is cooler and rainier with the same low prices, and October is the better autumn month for wine country. January is colder still, with Orthodox Christmas and the ski season in full swing. If your goal is Tbilisi itself rather than snow, spring and autumn are the stronger choices.
