Taupō
Give Taupō 2 nights: one full day for Huka Falls, the lake and a geothermal walk, one for a Tongariro or skydive add-on. Skip it as a drive-through.
Taupō sits on the north shore of New Zealand's largest lake, a caldera of one of the world's biggest supervolcanoes, at the junction of SH 1 and SH 5. The town centre is compact and walkable, but the sights — Huka Falls, the Aratiatia dam, Craters of the Moon, the Wairakei steam field — are spread along the Waikato River and need a car, bike or shuttle. Two nights covers the core; add a night if you want the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or a skydive.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable. For Huka Falls, Aratiatia, Craters of the Moon and the Wairakei field you need a car, a rental bike or a shuttle — most activity operators offer free pick-up. InterCity coaches run several times a day to Rotorua, Auckland, Napier and Wellington.
