Taung
Skip Taung unless you are a palaeoanthropology enthusiast: the Taung Child site is a half-day stop, but the town itself has no other reason to visit.
Taung is a small town in the North West Province known for the 1924 discovery of the Taung Child fossil, a key piece in human evolution. The town itself is quiet with limited services. Most visitors come for the Taung World Heritage Site and the annual Cultural Calabash in September. A half-day is enough; there is no need to stay overnight.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- The Taung World Heritage Site has no official visitor centre or marked trails — check with the North West Parks Board before going.
- Fuel stations are scarce; fill up in Mahikeng or Klerksdorp.
- The Cultural Calabash dates vary; confirm on local social media closer to September.
Taung is generally safe during the day, but petty crime can occur. Avoid walking alone after dark. The site road is unpaved and isolated — do not go alone without a charged phone and full fuel tank.
