Taubaté
Give Taubaté one night as a stop on the São Paulo–Rio corridor, or skip it: the sights are small museums and churches, not a destination.
Taubaté is the second city of the Paraíba Valley, halfway between São Paulo and Rio on the Via Dutra, and the birthplace of writer Monteiro Lobato and film-maker Amácio Mazzaropi. Its draw is a cluster of small museums, colonial churches and free municipal parks, plus a base for the Serra da Mantiqueira and the North Coast. Most travellers pass through on the highway; one night is enough unless you use it as a base.
