Tarquinia
Half a day for the Etruscan tombs and museum, then move on. One night if you want to see the medieval centre at dusk and take a slow morning.
Tarquinia is a small medieval town in northern Lazio, best known for the Monterozzi necropolis — a UNESCO site with painted Etruscan tombs — and the National Etruscan Museum in the Palazzo Vitelleschi. The town itself has a compact historic centre with towers and a cathedral. Most visitors come from Rome as a day trip (1.5–2 h by train) or stop on the way between Rome and Tuscany.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- The necropolis is a flat field with hut-like covers over the tombs; manage expectations.
- Some tombs are closed for restoration; check the official site before visiting.
- Speed cameras and police checks on the SS1 Aurelia road.
- ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the historic centre; park outside.
Tarquinia is safe. Watch for ZTL signs in the centre and keep valuables out of sight in the car. The necropolis is exposed to the sun; bring water and a hat.
