Tarpon Springs
Give Tarpon Springs one full day, not a base: the Sponge Docks and Greek food are the draw, and you can see it all on foot in 3–4 hours.
Tarpon Springs is a small Gulf-coast city in Pinellas County with the highest share of Greek residents of any US city, built on the sponge-diving trade of the early 1900s. The Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard are the centre of it: Greek restaurants, sponge shops and boat trips. Most travellers come for a half or full day from Clearwater, Dunedin or Tampa, and stay one night at most.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the city has limited public transport and the docks, downtown and beaches are spread out. Once parked at the Sponge Docks, the waterfront strip, Tarpon Avenue and Spring Bayou are all walkable. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin outside the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity: plan the docks early morning or after 5pm, and carry water.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and evacuation zones if you visit then.
- The Sponge Docks are touristy and some shops sell imported sponges, not local ones: ask where they were harvested.
- Parking at the docks fills on weekends and during the January Epiphany event.
Tarpon Springs is a low-crime city and the docks, Pinellas Avenue and Tarpon Avenue are easy to walk. The real risks are summer heat, afternoon thunderstorms and hurricane season (Jun–Nov): check the forecast and know your evacuation zone.
