Tarana
Stop only if you want to see the overgrown Oberon Line rail bed from the public road or a pub bed between Lithgow and Bathurst: a short stop, or one night.
Tarana is a village of about 170 people on the Main Western Line between Lithgow and Bathurst, at the junction with the Oberon branch that closed in 1979. There is one pub with rooms, one small cafe, a monthly market and the abandoned track bed. Trains are the Bathurst Bullet diesel services, a handful a day, so the stop works as a half-day break or one night, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are the Bathurst Bullet diesel services only, a few a day; check times before you commit, and the Dubbo XPT stops here only on request.
- The Oberon Line track bed is overgrown and crosses private or unfenced land in places; view it from public roads, do not trespass or walk the rails.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the roads at dawn and dusk; the back roads are narrow with no shoulder.
- Mobile coverage in the valley: check your provider's coverage map before you rely on it.
A quiet village with little street crime. The real risks are the infrequent trains, unlit narrow roads with wildlife at dawn and dusk, and walking the overgrown rail bed where it crosses private land.
