Tarago
Stop for the heritage rail station and a coffee on the Goulburn–Bungendore run, or skip: nothing else in town needs more than an hour.
Tarago is a 400-person village on the Bombala rail line between Sydney and Canberra, 30 minutes south of Goulburn and 25 minutes northeast of Bungendore. The heritage-listed station is the one sight; the town works as a leg-stretch or a quiet overnight, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Canberra Xplorer is a request stop with three services a day each way: book ahead on the NSW TrainLink site, and check the timetable before you commit.
- No taxi rank or rideshare coverage you can rely on; arrange a lift or drive yourself.
- Fuel and food options are limited: fill up in Goulburn or Bungendore.
- Kangaroos and wombats on Braidwood Road and Bungendore Road at dawn and dusk.
Very low crime; the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, winter frost and black ice, and the lack of phone signal in pockets outside the village.
