Taradale is a Napier suburb 10 km southwest of the city centre, and it holds two of Hawke's Bay's oldest wineries, Mission Estate and Church Road, plus the Otatara pa site and the Sugar Loaf hill walk. It has a compact Gloucester Street town centre with motels and B&Bs, but most beds, restaurants and nightlife sit in Napier or Hastings. Treat it as a wine-and-hills half-day or a quiet, cheaper place to sleep with a car.

Get around
A car or bike is the practical choice: the wineries, Otatara pa and the hill tracks are spread out and not all on footpaths. Route 12 links Taradale with Napier and Hastings, roughly two buses an hour on weekday daytime, but the last bus from Napier leaves around 6PM and Sunday service is sparse. Walking works only inside the Gloucester Street centre.
