Treat Taoyuan as an airport night, not a destination: sleep here only if you land after 22:00 or fly before 09:00; otherwise ride the MRT to Taipei.
Taoyuan is Taiwan's airport city and its second-most-populous municipality, but almost nobody comes for the city itself. The airport MRT links Taoyuan Airport (TPE) to Taipei Main Station in about 35–40 minutes, so most travellers pass straight through. Taoyuan earns its place on a trip only for a late arrival, an early departure, or a half-day in the hills at Daxi or Lalashan on the way south.

Get around
The airport MRT (A12/A13 to A18 HSR and Taipei) is the fast link; TRA local trains connect Taoyuan and Zhongli stations. Local buses cover the districts but English information is thin, so taxis or a rental car are easier for the hills. Taxis start around NT$100 plus about NT$37.5 per km (2026 estimate).

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A nod or light handshake; 'nǐ hǎo'; avoid: Hugs with new acquaintances
- Handing things: Two hands for cards, gifts and money; avoid: Tossing money on the counter
- Gifts: Fruit or a boxed sweet for hosts; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Clocks, umbrellas, pears and anything in fours — they sound like death or parting
- MRT: Queue at the markings, give up priority seats; avoid: Eating, drinking or chewing gum past the gates
- Temples: Enter right, exit left; one or three sticks of incense; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; pointing at deities
- Home visit: Shoes off; slippers provided; avoid: Writing names in red ink
- Sensitive topics: Follow your host's lead; many people hold a range of views on identity and cross-strait ties; avoid: Assuming everyone thinks the same about China or the ROC's status
Scams and watch-outs
- The airport MRT stops running around midnight: check the last train before you book a late arrival.
- Taoyuan HSR station and TRA Taoyuan station are far apart and not connected; transfer via Banqiao or the MRT instead.
- English bus information is limited outside the MRT and main TRA stations.
- Summer brings typhoons and heavy rain; check forecasts before hill trips to Lalashan or Xiao Wulai.
Taoyuan is a safe, ordinary Taiwanese city; the real risks are traffic, scooters on pavements and the midnight airport MRT cutoff. Keep an eye on typhoon warnings in summer.
