Taos is a small high-desert town of about 4,700 people at 2,100 m, built around an adobe plaza and an art colony that started in the early 1900s. Its main draw is Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, 5 km north of the plaza. Skiing, rafting and the mountain villages fill the rest of the year. Most trips need 2 nights; 3 if you ski or hike.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along Paseo del Pueblo and out to the pueblo, Ranchos de Taos and the ski valley, and regional buses run weekdays only. The plaza itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. The NCRTD Chile Line runs a free weekday route along Paseo del Pueblo up to Taos Pueblo; the Taos Express weekend service links Española and Santa Fe. Taos Trolley Tours covers the main sights in season.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: the town sits at about 2,100 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and expect headaches if you fly in from sea level.
- Taos Pueblo closes without much notice for religious ceremonies, including an extended closure around Easter; check before you drive out.
- Photography and sketching at the pueblo need a paid permit, and you must not photograph residents without permission.
- Mountain passes and the ski valley road can close in winter snow; carry chains or check conditions.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms build over the Sangre de Cristo mountains most days in Jul–Aug.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the High Road and in the gorge.
Taos is a low-crime small town; the real risks are altitude, winter mountain roads and summer lightning above treeline. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
