Tangshan
唐山
Give Tangshan one full day for the earthquake memorial and Kailuan mine park, or skip it and use the 1-hour Beijing rail link for a day trip instead.
Tangshan is a steel city of 7.6 million in Hebei, rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake that killed at least 242,000 people. Its sights are industrial and memorial rather than scenic, and it has no subway. Most travellers come for one day from Beijing by high-speed rail, or pass through on the way to the Eastern Qing Tombs at Zunhua.

Scams and watch-outs
- Museums close on Mondays; the earthquake museum shuts at 16:30 Apr–Oct and 16:00 Nov–Mar.
- Air quality can be poor on still winter days; check the daily index if you have breathing problems.
- Few staff speak English outside hotels; have place names written in Chinese.
- Kailuan mine-park tickets are sold at the office until 16:30 and the underground mine tour is not sold separately.
Ordinary big-city risk, not street crime: watch traffic and e-bikes when crossing, keep taxi meters running, and treat winter air quality as the main health issue.
