Tampico
Give Tampico 2 nights: one for the colonial centre and the canal boat, one for Playa Miramar. Skip it if you want English menus and walkable sights.
Tampico is a Gulf oil port on the Pánuco River, 6 h by road from Mexico City and 6–8 h from the Texas border. It is a domestic beach city for drivers from Monterrey, not an international stop: sights are spread out, English is rare, and the beach sits in neighbouring Ciudad Madero. Two nights covers the centre, the crocodile canal and Miramar.

Get around
Driving is easiest and speed limits and red lights are enforced. Taxis and Uber/Didi work day and night. Carros de ruta are fixed-route shared taxis, about M$10 a ride. Water taxis cross the river east of the centre.

Scams and watch-outs
- English is uncommon, even in hotels: have addresses and dishes written down.
- The refinery can leave an acrid smell over the centre; the beach breeze clears it.
- Do not drive the border-to-Ciudad Victoria highways: fly or use a major bus line.
- Crocodiles live in the Laguna del Carpintero and Canal de la Cortadura: stay behind railings.
- The abandoned hospital is unsafe and entry is not legal.
Tampico is calm again after the 2010s violence, but it is not a resort: use taxis or ride-hailing at night, avoid driving Tamaulipas highways, and treat the crocodile lagoons and the abandoned hospital as no-go.
