- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Senegal ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Senegalese government sources before booking.
- Senegal ↗Dress modestly in towns and at religious sites: shoulders and knees covered.
- Senegal ↗Check your government's advice before travelling to parts of the Casamance region in the south.
Tambacounda is Senegal's largest and poorest region, a dry, sparsely populated wedge of savanna in the south-east that also takes in the Kédougou hills. It is not a beach or a colonial-town stop. People come for two things: Niokolo-Koba National Park, the country's biggest wildlife reserve, and the djembe and dance tradition around Tambacounda city, where Malian masters settled in the mid-1900s. Kédougou, further south, adds hills, waterfalls and Bassari villages. Roads are long and slow, so this is a 3–5 night add-on, not a day trip from Dakar.

- The N1 from Dakar is a full day of driving; break it or fly to Tambacounda if a service is running (check).
- Fuel stations thin out south of Tambacounda toward Kédougou; fill up when you can.
- Malaria is present; take advice before you travel.
- Niokolo-Koba access and wildlife viewing vary with water and season; do not expect dense game.

| Bakel | Tambacounda | 150 min | unknown | Fort and river views; fuel up before you leave the main road. |

- Slightly cooler at altitude. Waterfalls are at their best late in the rains, but tracks are worst then; November–February is the cleanest window.
The dry season (November–May) is the practical window; the far south-east is best November–February before the heat builds.
