Come for Uno Port, not the town: 1 night if you ferry to Naoshima at dawn, otherwise a half-day from Okayama on the JR Uno Line.
Tamano is a small Seto Inland Sea port city at the end of the JR Uno Line, 45–60 minutes from Okayama. Almost everyone here is either catching a ferry to Naoshima and the other art islands or coming back from one. The town itself gives you a calm beach, a small aquarium, a hot spring by the water and a handful of Setouchi Triennale sculptures around the port. One night is enough; a half-day works if you are only passing through.

- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Ferries to Naoshima and Teshima fill up on Triennale weekends: buy or reserve ahead.
- Buses to Shibukawa and Ojigatake are infrequent; check the last return before you go.
- Some onsen refuse entry to heavily intoxicated guests or visible tattoos; overseas visitors may enter with a passport.
- Small restaurants and the aquarium keep short hours; many places close one weekday.
Very safe. The real risks are infrequent buses, a long walk back from the beach after dark, and ferry queues on Triennale weekends.
