Talpa de Allende
Go for 1–2 nights, not as a base: a walkable Pueblo Mágico with a basilica, birria and cobblestone streets, 2.5–3.5 h by bus from Puerto Vallarta or Guadalajara.
Talpa de Allende is a small highland town in Jalisco, about 200 km west of Guadalajara and 100 km inland from the Pacific coast. It is a Pueblo Mágico and the endpoint of a walking pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, whose statue of the Virgin, La Chaparrita, draws pilgrims year-round and in huge numbers on 7 October and during Holy Week. The town itself is compact: one plaza, one basilica, a market and a few streets of colonial buildings. One full day covers the sights; two nights let you add the maple forest or a slow food day.

Get around
The town is small and walkable; bicycles work for the outskirts. Taxis wait at a sitios next to the Plaza Principal, or your hotel can call one. Ride-share apps such as Uber do not operate in rural towns like this. For the maple forest and other out-of-town spots you need a car or a hired taxi.

- Ride-share apps do not work here; arrange taxis through your hotel or the plaza sitios.

Talpa is a small, quiet highland town and feels safe by day and evening. The real issues are slippery cobblestones, unlit side streets after dark, and the pilgrimage dates when the town is packed: keep valuables out of sight and use hotel-arranged taxis at night.
