Tallinn in April: what to expect

April in Tallinn is a transition month: the snow is usually gone from the city, the ice breaks up in the bay, and daylight jumps from about 13 hours at the start to more than 15 by the end. What does not change quickly is the air temperature. Days typically sit around 8–10 °C, nights hover near freezing, and a cold wind off the Baltic makes the Old Town feel several degrees colder than the number on your phone.

Expect a mix of bright, dry spells and grey days with drizzle, sleet or a late snow shower. The ground in parks and on the Toompea slopes can be muddy. Sunshine is intermittent rather than reliable, so plan indoor stops between walks. The sea stays at 3–5 °C, which rules out swimming and makes the ferry crossing to the islands a cold, breezy trip.

The upside is light. By late April you can walk the Old Town walls at 20:30 in daylight, which stretches a short trip considerably.

April is one of the quietest months in Tallinn. Large cruise ships do not start calling in numbers until May, school holidays are over, and the Christmas-market crowds are long gone. You can walk Town Hall Square, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the viewing platforms on Toompea without waiting, and museum tickets rarely need booking.

Prices follow the crowds. Hotel rooms in the Old Town and around Viru are at their low-season level, and midweek nights are cheaper than weekends. Flights and ferries are also cheaper than in June, though Easter weekend and the run-up to 1 May can tighten availability on buses, ferries and the Tallinn–Tartu route.

Some island guesthouses and seasonal cafés stay closed until May, and a few countryside attractions open only at weekends in April. Check opening days before you build a day trip around them.

April is a light month for city-wide events in Tallinn. The main fixed dates are Easter, which falls on 3–6 April in 2026 (Good Friday 3 April, Easter Sunday 5 April), and Spring Day on 1 May, whose parties begin on the evening of 30 April. Both are public holidays with most shops open and offices closed.

Beyond the holidays, look for spring concerts and theatre in the city's halls, and the start of the outdoor season at the Tallinn Botanic Garden and Kadriorg Park. The bigger Estonian spring events sit outside Tallinn: Walpurgis Night in Tartu on 30 April, and the Soomaa 'fifth season' flood canoe tours, which depend on snowmelt and usually peak in April.

The Old Town is the obvious April choice: it is compact, walkable and mostly indoors-friendly, with the City Museum, the Kiek in de Kök tower and the churches giving you shelter when a shower passes. Toompea's viewing platforms are worth the climb on any clear afternoon.

Kadriorg Park and the Kumu art museum make a good half-day east of the centre, and the Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) is a reliable wet-weather stop on the north side. For a longer day out, Lahemaa National Park works in April if you accept mud on the trails and cold coastal wind; the manor houses and bog boardwalks are open, but some visitor facilities run reduced hours.

Skip the islands and beach towns for now. Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Pärnu are reachable, but many guesthouses and seasonal services stay closed until May, and the sea crossing is cold and sometimes rough. Save them for Tallinn in May or June.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer and a hat and gloves will cover most April conditions; add a compact umbrella and shoes with grip for wet cobbles. Sunglasses are worth bringing for the bright, low-angle spring sun.

Bring a small daypack for layers you shed and re-add, and a power bank if you plan long photo walks in the extended daylight. If you are heading to Soomaa for the flood season, waterproof trousers and a dry bag are useful; operators usually supply the canoe and life jacket.

March is colder and often snowy or slushy, with shorter days but the same low prices. May is the first month most travellers would call a clear yes: the trees green up, temperatures reach the mid-teens, and the sea is still cold but the terraces open. June brings white nights and the Old Town Days festival, along with higher prices and the first cruise crowds.

If your dates are flexible and you want the best balance of weather and value, aim for late May. If you are fixed on April, treat the weather as a variable and build in indoor alternatives.
