Best tours in Tallinn: walking, food and day tours

Tallinn rewards walking, and the Old Town is small enough that a guide's value is context, not distance. A 2-hour walking tour through the Town Hall Square, the walls and Toompea gives you the medieval story and the Soviet layers in one go, and it is the cheapest way to orient yourself on day one. Do this before you wander alone; you will notice far more afterwards.

The second purchase worth making is food. A Kalamaja or Telliskivi food tour covers the post-industrial side of the city — the neighbourhoods the parent guide flags as the modern face of Tallinn — and gets you into places you would otherwise walk past. Telliskivi Creative City and the Kalamaja wooden-house streets are the usual route.

For a day out, Lahemaa National Park is the standard choice: manors, bog boardwalks and coast about an hour from the city, and hard to reach by public transport without a car. Saaremaa and Tartu are better as overnight trips than day tours; see the Estonia guide for those.

Skip paid tours that only walk you around Toompea, the viewing platforms Kohtuotsa and Patkuli, or the city walls. Those are free, signposted and short. Save the money for food and Lahemaa.

Prices below are 2026 estimates; confirm at booking. Tip-based walking tours are free to reserve and you pay what you think it was worth at the end — €5–15 per person is the normal range, and €10 is a fair default. Fixed-price walking tours cluster around €15–25.

Most tours start between 10:00 and 11:00, with a second food-tour slot in the late afternoon. Lahemaa day tours usually leave 08:30–09:30 and return 17:00–18:00. Evening ghost and legends walks run around 19:00–20:00 in summer. Winter schedules thin out sharply; some operators run only weekends from November to March (check).

Group size matters more than price. Small-group food tours cap at 8–12 people; large walking tours can be 30+. If you want to ask questions, book the smaller option.

Most tours meet at Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) or at a named gate such as Viru. From the ferry terminal at Sadam, it is a 15–20 minute walk to Viru Gate, or a short tram ride. From the bus station (Bussijaam), tram 2 or 4 reaches the centre in about 10 minutes.

If you fly in, Tallinn Airport is 4 km from the centre; tram 4 and buses run to the city, roughly 15–20 minutes. From the airport to a Town Hall Square meeting point, allow 30 minutes door to door.

Lahemaa day tours normally pick up from a central point or from larger hotels; confirm the pickup address when you book, because some operators only collect from the Old Town side.

For flight timing from your home country, book a morning arrival if you want to join a same-day walking tour — afternoon arrivals usually miss the 10:00–11:00 slots.

Do the walking tour on your first morning. It sets up everything else — where to eat, which streets to avoid at night, and how the Old Town connects to Kalamaja and Telliskivi.

Avoid the cruise-ship window. When ships are in port, usually mid-morning to mid-afternoon, the Town Hall Square and the main lanes are packed. Book a tour that starts at 10:00 or after 15:00, or take the food tour instead, which runs in quieter neighbourhoods.

Check what is included. Food tours usually cover tastings but not extra drinks; Lahemaa tours sometimes exclude the manor entry fee. Ask before you pay.

Tipping is not obligatory in Estonia, but it is expected on tip-based tours and appreciated elsewhere. 10% is a normal restaurant tip.
