Tallinn airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Tallinn Airport (TLL) is unusually close to the centre — about 4 km, so every option is short. The tram is the default for most visitors; a taxi is the fallback for late arrivals, heavy bags or a hotel far from the tram line.

Prices below are 2026 estimates. Confirm the current tram timetable and fare before you fly, since schedules shift with the seasons.

Tram 4 connects the airport with the city centre and continues toward the port area. It runs through the day and into the evening, roughly 05:00–24:00, with a gap overnight (check). The stop is a short walk from the terminal exit, signposted in the arrivals hall.

You need a validated ticket. Buy one in the Tallinn public transport app, from a ticket machine where available, or from the driver on some routes; a single ticket covers one hour of travel, so a connection costs nothing extra. Travel is free only for registered Tallinn residents, not for visitors, and inspectors do fine passengers without a valid ticket.

City buses also serve the airport and are useful if your hotel sits away from the tram line. Check the route map at the stop or in the app before boarding; the same €2 one-hour ticket applies.

Bolt is the default ride-hailing app in Tallinn and is usually the cheapest door-to-door option: €5–12 across the city centre depending on demand and time of day. Pick-up is at the marked taxi area outside arrivals.

Street taxis set their own tariffs, so check the price sticker on the window before you get in, or agree the fare first. Airport taxi ranks can charge more than an app ride at peak times. Card and app payment are normal; cash is accepted but not needed.

For a group of three or four with luggage, a taxi often costs about the same as four tram tickets and saves the walk at the far end.

A solo traveller on a daytime arrival spends €2 on the tram. Two people with bags usually spend €5–12 on a Bolt. The difference is small enough that luggage and arrival time should decide, not price alone.

If you plan several city trips, a day ticket or a multi-day pass works out cheaper than single tickets — check current prices in the app. Tickets bought on board may carry a small surcharge on some services.

Tallinn Airport is small and quick: passport control and baggage usually take 20–40 minutes on a normal arrival, longer on peak summer weekends. Allow an hour from landing to city centre by tram.

Buy a local eSIM or roaming plan before you land so the transport app and Bolt work immediately. Card payments are accepted almost everywhere, including on board where machines exist, but keep a little cash for a taxi that cannot take a card.

In winter, pavements and tram stops can be icy; a taxi is worth the money with a suitcase. In summer, the walk from the tram stop to an Old Town hotel is short but cobbled, which is hard on wheeled bags.
