Talkeetna
Stay 1–2 nights: one full day for a Denali flightseeing trip, one half-day for the historic district. Skip it if you won't fly or climb.
Talkeetna is a small historic district on the Talkeetna Spur Road, about 2.5–3 h by car north of Anchorage and the closest road town to the south side of Denali. There is no town government; the draw is flightseeing around Denali, glacier landings, river rafting, dog-sled tours and the ranger station for climbers. The walkable core is a few blocks of old buildings, and most visitors come for one night between Anchorage and Denali National Park.

Get around
The historic district is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Everything else — the bakery, the brewery tasting room, most lodges — sits along the Talkeetna Spur Road, so a car, bike or lodge shuttle is needed. The Alaska Railroad Denali Star stops in town, and some lodges run free transfers from the station.
