Give Takayama two nights: one full day for the old town and markets, one for the Hida Folk Village or a Shirakawa-gō run. Skip it as a day trip from Nagoya.
Takayama is a small mountain city in Gifu with an Edo-period merchant quarter, two morning markets and a working sake-brewery street, all walkable in about 20 minutes. It is the transport hub of the Hida region, so most travellers pair it with Shirakawa-gō or the Oku-Hida onsen villages. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night only works if you arrive early and leave late.

The centre is flat and small: station to Sanmachi is a 10-minute walk, and the Higashiyama walking course is a 3.5 km loop. Bicycle rental runs about ¥600 a day. Nohi Bus covers Shirakawa-gō, Kamikōchi and the Oku-Hida onsen villages from the bus terminal beside the station. - Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- JR Takayama Station does not take IC cards; local tickets are cash only.
- Festival nights (Apr 14–15, Oct 9–10) sell out weeks ahead: book the bed before the train.
- Winter brings regular snow and lows below -10 °C; summer days can swing from cool mornings to 35 °C.
- Many shops and restaurants in the old town close by 17:00–18:00; plan dinner near the station or book ahead.
Very safe for a city of its size; the real risks are winter ice on the old-town lanes, deer and bears on mountain trails, and cash-only counters at the station. Carry yen.
