Go for one night: Bitchu Matsuyama Castle plus the samurai lanes fill a day, and Fukiya needs a second. Skip if you have no car and no early start.
Takahashi is a small mountain city in western Okayama, built around one of Japan's few surviving original castles. Bitchu Matsuyama sits on a ridge above the station, reachable by taxi plus a steep walk, and the old samurai and merchant lanes below it are walkable in an afternoon. The Fukiya bengara district is 40 minutes by car or an hour by a handful of buses, so it works as a separate half day. Most travellers come from Okayama in 55 minutes by train.

Get around
The station area, Raikyu-ji and the samurai lanes are walkable. The castle needs a taxi (about ¥1,300) to the upper car park, then a 15–20 min uphill walk; walking the whole way from the station takes about 1 h 30 min. Buses to Fukiya run only 3–4 times a day, first departure around 10:50 and last return around 15:45, so you cannot do the centre and Fukiya on the same day without a car.The station area, Raikyu-ji and the samurai lanes are walkable. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The castle path is steep and closed to vehicles; wear shoes with grip and allow more time than you think.
- Fukiya buses are few and the last return is early: check the timetable before you board, or you are stranded.
- Sea-of-clouds mornings happen mainly Nov–Mar and are never guaranteed; the viewpoint is 8.5 km out and the early bus needs a reservation at least a day ahead.
- Many small shops and restaurants close early and some take irregular days off; carry some cash.
- Winter mornings at the castle can be icy.
Very safe. The real risks are the steep castle path, icy winter steps, deer and narrow roads if you drive, and missing the last Fukiya bus.
