Taiyuan is Shanxi's capital, a 2,500-year-old city on the Fen River that most travellers pass through on the way between Pingyao and Wutai Shan. Its three headline sights — the Shanxi Museum, the Twin Pagodas and Chongshan Temple — fit inside half a day. Jinci Temple, the best single monument, sits 25 km southwest and needs its own half-day.

- Jinci Temple and Tianlongshan Grottoes are outside the centre: budget 45 min each way by bus or car.
- Chunyang Palace has been closed for repair since 2018 with no reopening date given — check before you go.
- Summer rain peaks in July and August; winter days stay below freezing with a large day–night swing.
- Museum and temple hours are typically 08:00–17:00 or 18:00 with last entry 30–60 min earlier; confirm on the day.
Taiyuan is a low-crime city and safe to walk by day. Watch traffic — scooters and cars do not always yield — and keep an eye on your bag in the busy Liuxiang and railway-station areas. Air quality is better than a decade ago but can still be poor in winter.
