Tain
Baile Dhubhthaich
Give Tain one night if you want the Glenmorangie tour; otherwise pass through on the A9 or the Inverness–Thurso train and stop for two hours.
Tain is a small Victorian town on the Dornoch Firth, about 40 miles north of Inverness, and its one big draw is the Glenmorangie distillery. The town centre is compact and walkable; the museum and golf course sit within it, and the coast villages east of town are the reason to keep a car. Most travellers see it as a stop on the North Coast 500 or the Far North Line, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Tain station has no ticket office or machines: buy on board or in advance.
- The lane to Ferry Point is very narrow with no car park; pull onto the verge and keep passing places clear.
- Distillery tours run in limited numbers and the site goes offline for maintenance in April: book ahead.
- Midges are bad near water on still summer evenings; pack repellent.
- Many coastal sights and the museum close from October to March.
Tain is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, fast A9 traffic, cold wet weather on the coast and midges in summer.
