Tadcaster is a brewing town of about 5,900 people on the River Wharfe, midway between Leeds and York. The centre is plain 19th and 20th century low-rise, the sights take two hours, and the real draw is the bus corridor: the Coastliner 840/843 runs every 30 minutes and links Leeds, Tadcaster, York, Malton, Pickering, Whitby and Scarborough. Treat it as a stop on that line, not a destination.

Get around
The town is compact and walkable: centre, church and riverside are within 15 minutes on foot. Everything else (Towton, the windmill, the golf clubs, Hazlewood Castle) needs a car, taxi or bike. Buses run along the A64 corridor, not into the villages.
