Tabarca
Go for a half-day trip from Alicante or Santa Pola: the ferry takes 30–45 minutes, and 3 hours on foot covers the whole island. Skip if you want beaches, nightlife or more than one meal.
Tabarca is a tiny, car-free island off the Costa Blanca, ringed by a protected marine reserve with clear water and the largest posidonia seagrass meadow in the Spanish Mediterranean. The only settlement is a walled village of white houses, a handful of seafood restaurants and a small beach. Most visitors come for a few hours; staying overnight is possible but unnecessary for the scale of the place.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry schedules change by season: check the operator's site before you go.
- No ATM on the island; bring cash for meals and any purchases.
- The marine reserve is protected: do not take any shells, sand or marine life.
- Sun protection is essential — there is almost no shade outside the village.
Tabarca is very safe; the main risks are sunburn, dehydration and slippery rocks near the water. No crime reported beyond occasional petty theft — keep valuables with you on the beach.
