Székesfehérvár
Give Székesfehérvár one full day from Budapest or one night en route to Lake Balaton: the coronation ruins and old town fill a half-day, not a weekend.
Székesfehérvár is Hungary's first royal seat, 60 km southwest of Budapest, where kings were crowned and buried from 1038 to 1543. The medieval basilica is a ruin garden now, and the Turks destroyed most of the old city, so what you walk is mostly Baroque. It sits between Lake Velence and Lake Balaton, which makes it a practical stop rather than a destination in itself.
