Szamotuły
Skip as a base: see the castle and collegiate church in 3–4 hours on a half-day rail hop from Poznań, 25–35 min each way.
Szamotuły is a small Wielkopolska town 35 km north-west of Poznań, reached by frequent regional trains in 25–35 minutes. Its draw is compact: a 15th-century castle with the biggest icon collection in western Poland, a tower with a grim legend, and one of the region's oldest churches — all walkable in an afternoon. Beds are few, so most travellers come and go the same day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Dzień dobry, handshake; Pan/Pani with surname; avoid: First names with older people too early

- Name days: Wish people well on their name day (imieniny); avoid: Ignoring it if a colleague mentions it

Scams and watch-outs
- Castle is closed on Mondays; hours differ between May–Sep and Oct–Apr — check before travelling.
- Castle entry is a small fee and a guide costs extra; bring cash in złoty.
- Few beds in town and some places need a minimum group size — book ahead or plan to return to Poznań.
- Taxi ranks are rare; save a local taxi number before you arrive.
- English is less common than in Poznań; a translation app helps.
A quiet small town and generally safe; the practical risks are thin evening transport, few taxis and limited English rather than crime.
