Give Syracuse 2 nights: one full day for Ortigia on foot and one for the Neapolis ruins; add a third only for Noto or the beaches.
Syracuse splits into two halves about 20 minutes apart on foot: Ortigia, the baroque island where you sleep and eat, and Neapolis, the Greek and Roman archaeological park to the north. Two nights covers both without rushing, and the city works as a base for south-east Sicily. Most travellers arrive from Catania by bus or train in about an hour.

Get around
Ortigia and Neapolis are each about a 20-min walk from the station and from each other, so most trips are on foot. The Siracusa d'Amare electric navettes run three lines every 15–20 min from Molo Sant'Antonio: single €0.50, day pass €2, week pass €7. AST buses cover the wider city and beaches. Trains and intercity buses leave from the station area on Corso Umberto.

Scams and watch-outs
- Ortigia is a ZTL: most vehicles are banned at night and on Sundays and holidays. Do not drive into the island; park outside and walk.
- The Greek Theatre cannot be entered while stage and seating works continue: you look down from above. Check before you buy the park ticket.
- Castello Eurialo was closed as of 2023 with no worthwhile views from the road: skip unless you confirm it has reopened.
- Regional trains west via Noto and Pozzallo do not run on Sundays.
- Summer heat in the ruins is serious: go at opening, carry water, wear a hat.
Syracuse is a safe, walkable city; the real risks are summer heat in the ruins, the ZTL cameras if you drive onto Ortigia, and pickpockets in the crowded Duomo lanes in high season.
