Family fun

What works with kids, by age band.

Sydney is easy with children: flat shore paths, ferries as an adventure, and free playgrounds. Bring a hat, sun cover and sunscreen from October to March.
The Botanic Garden lawns, the Domain and Darling Harbour playgrounds are good breaks; strollers can go on trains and ferries.
Manly by ferry is a half-day treat; children under 16 pay half fare with an Opal child card, and children under 4 ride free (check current rules).
Rain plan: the Australian Museum, Powerhouse Museum and Queen Victoria Building are all indoors.
