First time in SydneySydney
Sydney is a harbour city built for walking in the morning and taking the train or ferry after: do the Opera House and the Botanic Garden before the sun is high, keep the middle of the day for shade or a museum, and treat every beach trip as a separate half day.
The honest verdict
Sydney's sights sit on a few kilometres of harbour shore, joined by trains and ferries that run to a timetable. The trips that go wrong are the ones that fight the sun and the distances: noon walks in January, a Bondi round trip squeezed between check-out and a flight, or a hotel picked for the view that is a long uphill walk from a station. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Manly, the Blue Mountains and the beaches are trips from one kept bed.
