Sydney is the main port and service town on Cape Breton Island, not a destination in its own right. Downtown is walkable in an afternoon — waterfront boardwalk, the 60-foot fiddle, two 18th-century houses, a small museum — while the real draws (Louisbourg, the Cabot Trail, Baddeck, Glace Bay) sit 30–90 minutes out and need a car or a tour. Most travellers sleep here one or two nights, use it as a ferry or airport gateway, and spend the days elsewhere. Cruise ships dock at the marine terminal in season, so downtown gets busy on port days.

Get around
Downtown sights are walkable, but almost everything worth seeing on Cape Breton is outside the city and needs a car or a booked tour. Transit Cape Breton runs local routes including to North Sydney; fares are low but frequency is limited, so do not plan a sightseeing day on the bus. Taxis cover short hops; rental cars are the practical choice and should be booked ahead in summer.
