Airports in Sweden: which one to fly into

Sweden is long and thin, so the airport question is really a routing question. Arlanda sits 40 km north of Stockholm and handles the bulk of long-haul arrivals. From there the Arlanda Express is the quickest link to Stockholm Central, while regional and commuter trains cost less and take longer; airport coaches run to the city terminal and to Uppsala. Allow extra time if you are connecting to a domestic flight, because Arlanda has several terminals and a transfer bus between them.

Landvetter serves Gothenburg and the Bohuslän coast. The airport bus is the standard transfer to the city centre, with a journey of roughly half an hour depending on traffic; taxis are metered and pricier. If your trip is Gothenburg, the islands and the west coast, flying here saves you a 3–3 h 20 train ride from Stockholm.

For Malmö, Lund and the whole of Skåne, Kastrup in Copenhagen is usually the better airport than any Swedish one: a direct train crosses the Öresund bridge to Malmö in well under an hour. It is a Danish airport, so you clear Danish border formalities and then enter Sweden by rail — check current ID and border rules before you travel.

In the north, Kiruna is the gateway to Swedish Lapland and Abisko, reached by bus to town and then train; Luleå is the northern hub for the Bothnian coast and Gammelstad. Both connect to Stockholm by domestic flight in about 1 h 35, and the night train is the alternative if you would rather not fly. Smaller regional airports exist across Sweden, but they mostly serve domestic and a few European routes — check whether your itinerary actually needs one.

Book the airport transfer with the flight, not after it. Arlanda Express tickets bought in advance are cheaper than walk-up fares, and the same is true of airport coaches; the commuter train is the budget option but adds time and a change at Stockholm Central.

Watch the Stockholm airport trap. Bromma has closed or reduced flights, so confirm whether your ticket says ARN or another Stockholm code before you book a hotel near the wrong one. If you are connecting onward by train, build slack: delays are common on the Southern Main Line, and a missed connection is worse than an early arrival.

Pack for the season you are actually flying into. Winter arrivals in Kiruna and Luleå land in deep cold, and a coat in the cabin bag beats unpacking at the gate. In summer, Arlanda and Landvetter are busy with domestic holiday traffic, so security queues are longest in the morning.
