Swansea
Abertawe
Give Swansea 2 nights as a base for the Gower beaches and Mumbles; skip the city centre sights if you have under half a day.
Swansea is Wales' second city and the gateway to the Gower Peninsula, the UK's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The city centre itself is small and was heavily rebuilt after wartime bombing, so most of the reason to come sits along the bay: the 8 km seafront promenade, the Maritime Quarter, and the village of Mumbles at the western end. Two nights lets you do one full Gower day and one bay day without rushing. Cardiff is 50 minutes by train if you want a bigger-city day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- It rains often and hard: pack a waterproof shell even in July and August.
- Some Gower beaches have no lifeguard cover outside the summer season; check tide times before walking the causeway to Worm's Head.
- Wind Street is the main night-out strip: busy and loud on weekends, with the usual late-night drink risks.
Swansea is a low-risk city for visitors; the real hazards are wet, slippery coastal paths, fast tides on the Gower, and late-night drink crowds on Wind Street.
